In simple terms, the word dhikr means to remember and in this context it means ‘remembrance of Allah’. Hence, recitation of the Quran (تلاوة القران), seeking forgiveness from Allah (استغفار), supplication (دعا), and prayer (صلاة) are all dhikr of Allah .

Allah says: Men who celebrate the praises of Allah, standing, sitting, and lying down on their sides, and contemplate the (wonders of) creation in the heavens and the earth, (With the thought): "Our Lord! not for naught Hast Thou created (all) this! Glory to Thee! Give us salvation from the penalty of the Fire.[3:191].

Prophet ﷺ said: The example of one does dhikr of Allah in comparison to who doesn't is like a living creature compared to a dead one. [Bukhari].
